It's spring! Color is returning to Central Park, flowers are blooming on Park Avenue, baseball is back, and the Department of Transportation is gearing up to resurface 1,150 lane miles of streets across the city, including here on the Upper East Side.
From the Department of Transportation:
Milling is the process of grinding off the top layer of asphalt or surface of a roadway. This is usually done in preparation for paving, although there are exceptions where no milling or only partial milling is needed. Resurfacing is the process of placing an asphalt overlay on a roadway, whether or not it has been milled. The milling process is noisy and may cause discomfort in the affected neighborhood for several days. Much of the work is done at night in order to minimize disruptions to traffic. Although NYC DOT takes steps to minimize the inconvenience, milling requires trucks, special machinery and portable lights. To minimize disruption, machinery is fitted with noise reduction equipment and crews attempt to keep noise to a minimum.
You can review weekly paving and milling schedules on the DOT website as the work season progresses. Schedules are always subject to change.
The first work of the season on the Upper East Side begins the night of Wednesday, April 8 in the area of Fifth Avenue between 61st Street and 58th Street and runs through Friday. Keep an eye out for other work nearby as DOT makes changes to Grand Army Plaza.
The Department of Design and Construction will also be in the neighborhood working on pedestrian ramp reconstruction. You'll notice flyers in the area before they begin their work, and you can expect to hear from the Department directly if you are a property owner in the vicinity. For the first part of April, DDC will work on pedestrian ramps at...
