April 2013 – Parks Committee

April 4, 2013 @ 6:30 pm EDT

1. Review of two proposals by the Central Park Conservancy: A restoration of Grand Army Plaza, located between 58th and 60th Streets along Fifth Avenue; and the reconstruction of the East 79th St. Playground, just south of the Metropolitan Museum of Art--joint issues with the Landmarks Committee. • Work at the Grand Army Plaza would entail replanting trees lost during the October 2011 storm and an in-kind restoration of the plaza that includes the installation of new pavements and infrastructure. • Reconstruction of Central Park's East 79th Street Playground aims to update and improve the experience for the playground’s youngest users and will include the installation of new equipment, play features, site furnishings, and pavements, and rebuilding infrastructure. 2. Review of a Parks Dept. proposal for the display of Carole Eisner's sculpture, Hosea, in Tramway Plaza from about the end of April to November of this year. According to the Parks Dept., the sculpture plays off the large gears found on the Tram above the plaza. 3. Discussion of plans for the Committee's April 25 forum on the Need for Public Open Space on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Margaret Price and Barbara Rudder, Co-Chairs
