Curbside Composting Service is Beginning Soon—Order Your Free Bin!

Curbside Composting is going citywide! ALL Manhattan, Staten Island, and Bronx residents will have FREE weekly composting service starting this October—no sign-up needed! Service begins the week of October 6, and compost will be collected on the same day as recycling. Help your residents and constituents find their recycling day at on.nyc.gov/CollectionDay.

How to Compost:
ALL Food Scraps and Food-Soiled Paper

  • Use any labeled bin (55 gallons or less) with a secure lid or your DSNY brown bin. Order a free Composting Bin Decal.
  • Line your bin with any bag to keep it clean.
  • Tie the bag closed and securely close the bin lid before setting the bin out at the curb for collection.
  • Write your address on your bin.

ALL Leaf and Yard Waste

  • Any labeled bin (55 gallons or less) with a secure lid or DSNY brown bin.
  • Clear plastic bag or paper leaf bag.
  • Bundle twigs and branches with twine and place on curb next to bins or bags.

Composting Will be Mandatory
Leaf and yard waste separation:
There will be a 3-month warning period before residents are subject to fines.

Separation of food waste and food-soiled paper:
The warning period runs through Spring 2025 before residents are subject to fines.
