CB8 Statement regarding the memorial to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others in Carl Schurz Park

Recently, the members of Community Board 8 Manhattan were deeply disturbed upon hearing that posters and other signage displayed at Carl Schurz Park in memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others were removed by NYC Department of Parks and Recreation employees in error. The removal of this memorial is not only a violation of Parks Department policy, but also disrespects the lives lost and the ongoing efforts to bring about justice and racial equity to our city.

CB8 has spoken with the Parks Department and has been informed that the posters and other signage were returned to the park and will not be removed again. All Manhattan Parks administrators, managers and supervisors were also sent an additional notice reaffirming this directive.

CB8 remains in solidarity with those exercising their First Amendment rights and those who continue to peacefully gather to grieve, protest, and call out for change.
